Thing to do before and after a house sit

Congratulations on being selected for a house sit – what an exciting opportunity! However, before you dive into your responsibilities, there are a few crucial steps to ensure a successful house sitting experience.

Before the House Sit

Ideally, arrange to meet the homeowners and their pets in person. This allows both parties to establish rapport and ensures clarity regarding expectations. If an in-person meeting isn’t feasible due to distance, opt for a phone call or video chat.

During this initial discussion, agree on the dates, handover procedures, and any specific requirements the homeowners may have. It’s essential to understand their preferences for your arrival and departure, as well as their expectations in case of emergencies.

Clarify details such as pet care routines, medical issues, and emergency contacts. The homeowners should provide a list of essential contacts, including emergency services and neighbours with spare keys.

Establish clear boundaries within the house, including guidelines on using pantry items, kitchen utensils, and laundry facilities. Respect any areas designated as off-limits by the homeowners.

During the House Sit

Throughout the house sitting period, maintain open communication with the homeowners and adhere to the agreed-upon routines. Ensure the house remains clean and orderly, replacing any consumed items and maintaining the same standard as when you arrived.

Post-House Sit

After the house sit concludes, promptly inform the homeowners of any noteworthy occurrences regarding the house or pets, such as illnesses or unexpected expenses. Provide details of actions taken and expenses incurred, such as purchasing additional pet food. Positive feedback about your experience is appreciated and can increase the likelihood of being rehired for future house sits. Express gratitude to the homeowners for entrusting you with their home and pets, and kindly request a review to enhance your profile for future opportunities.
